A short film titled “Naobibi” has been made capturing the fragile ecology, mystique, and human struggles of Bangladesh’s haor regions amid the impacts of climate change. The shooting was recently completed in various scenic locations of Nikli and Karimganj haor areas in Kishoreganj.
The film stars Mahafuz Munna in the lead role, who was recently praised for his performance in the feature film “Ural.” Playing the role of the mysterious young woman Maya is singer Israt Jahan Pomie, well known both at home and abroad for her music. Naobibi marks her debut as an actor.
Speaking to the media, Mahafuz Munna said: “Director Kayes bhai offered me the role in his first short film. After reading the script, I was deeply impressed. I have rarely seen such a well-analyzed screenplay. For me, the character and the story always come first.”
He added: “Since this is an independent film, I knew from the beginning that it would require hard work and strong teamwork to bring it to life. I have acted in a few independent films before, and teamwork is always crucial for a good project. I truly felt that spirit of teamwork in ‘Naobibi,’ and I’m grateful to everyone in the team.”
Israt Jahan Pomie described her debut acting role as deeply challenging. “Portraying Maya was not just about acting—it also meant representing the haor. Through me, audiences will see not only Maya, but also the haor itself,” she said.
The story follows a traveler who encounters a strange mystery upon arriving in the haor. While chasing Maya—seen standing on a blaze of fire rising from the water at night—the traveler ventures deeper into the haor’s enigmatic world.
The short film ‘Naobibi’ was written and scripted by Shah Muhammad Mosahid and directed by young filmmaker Moshiur Rahman Kayes. It is produced by Mak Ripon, with cinematography by Ananda Sarkar. The cast also includes Shah Shanto and child actor Shah Obayed Nehan.
According to the makers, the film seeks to capture not only the nature, culture, and struggles of the haor people but also the stark realities of climate change impacting the region.
