A workshop titled “Bamboo and Cane Seasoning and Treatment” was held on 25–26 February 2026 at the bamboo and cane industry cluster in Ghior Upazila of Manikganj district. The workshop was organized by the SME Foundation with the support of the Bangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI). About 150 families are involved in the bamboo and cane industry in this cluster, producing various household and home décor items. A total of around 600 workers, including both men and women, are engaged in this sector.
Participants received hands-on training on how to increase the durability of bamboo, cane, and wood through both natural and chemical methods, as well as on wood drying and strength assessment techniques. They were also taught how to use solar kilns or mini glass houses to save time and reduce costs while increasing production. Special emphasis was given on the use of BB solution to protect bamboo, cane, and wood from insect and fungal attacks.
Usually, seasoning requires 15 to 40 days under sunlight depending on thickness. However, by using solar kilns or mini glass houses, the process can be completed within just 3 to 10 days. This method plays a significant role in boosting production and reducing raw material wastage.
The resource persons for the workshop were Md. Anisur Rahman, Divisional Officer of the Wood Preservation Division of BFRI, and Dr. Md. Roushan Ali, Divisional Officer of the Wood Drying and Strength Evaluation Division of BFRI. Also present were Md. Nazmul Islam, Deputy Manager of the SME Foundation, and Md. Abu Sufian, Junior Officer of the foundation. At the end of the workshop, certificates were distributed among the participants.
